OBSERVATORY HOTEL WELCOMES PETS

February 25, 2012

OBSERVATORY HOTEL WELCOMES PETS    The Observatory Hotel in Kent Street, Sydney welcomes your pet, whether dog, cat or bird, (no elephants or giraffes allowed) to stay with you in one of their elegant rooms or suites when you register as a guest.  The Observatory is part of the Orient-Express Group and is renowned for its Galileo Restaurant which offers fine dining for that special celebration.  The Globe Brasserie & Bar is also the setting for their famous daily afternoon high teas.

As far as I am aware, this is the only hotel in the heart of Sydney that encourages pets to spend a vacation amidst their 5 star surroundings. While you are enjoying being pampered with a massage in The Observatory’s Day Spa, you can forget your cares and relax without imagining your pet is fretting at home alone.

During their stay, pets don’t need to worry when they start to feel a little peckish as they have
their own room service menu.  All the meals listed on the menu are made from fresh produce.

Why not give your devoted pets a little taste of luxury, I’m sure they deserve it.  Sandra T.

NEW YORK’S HOTEL BEACON

February 19, 2012

New York City’s Hotel Beacon, conveniently located on the fashionable Upper West Side at Broadway & West 75th Street, was one of the attractions featured at the recent Visit USA promotion held in Sydney for the travel industry.

It was great to catch up again with Thomas Travers, the Hotel Beacon’s General Manager, who flew out to Australia for this annual event.

A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Beacon and can highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience living like a true New Yorker.

Central Park is a five minute walk away past streets lined with brownstones and trendy restaurants and diners.  Opposite the hotel, occupying the whole block, was one of the largest supermarkets I have ever seen, just great to pop over and buy a few items to bring back to my suite and cook my own dinner.  Most of the Beacon’s rooms have a fully fitted out kitchen, ideal for those who want a relaxing evening after a full day of sightseeing.  Sandra T.

LA TRAVIATA UNDER THE STARS

February 19, 2012

LA TRAVIATA UNDER THE STARS.  The Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and city skyline will be the backdrop when Opera Australia presents the three week season of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, commencing on 24 March 2012.

The opera is to be held on a tailor made stage built over the water off the Royal Botanic Gardens and will feature a forty piece orchestra, magnificent sets and beautiful costumes.

A giant 9 metre chandelier featuring 10,000 Swarovski crystals will be suspended from a 26 metre crane, which will be blackened out, making it invisible against the night sky.  At the end of Act I, Violetta, after singing the famous aria Sempre Libera, will ascend with the chandelier as fireworks explode.

La Traviata will be performed in Italian with English subtitles and will run for two and a half hours. This unique and spectacular production should certainly give a boost to Sydney’s tourist numbers.  Sandra T.

MORE TO CANADA THAN MOUNTIES

February 15, 2012

MORE TO CANADA THAN MOUNTIES   The Canadian Tourism Commission recently presented some of Canada’s signature experiences to local media during a lunch held at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

Quebec and the Yukon were amongst the featured regions, as well as British Columbia with Victoria’s beautiful Butchart Gardens, a short distance from Vancouver, which is a popular cruise port for Australians.  The Rocky Mountaineer train service departs from Vancouver on its journeys inland to many scenic destinations such as  Lake Louise.

One of Canada’s most talented young performers, the keyboard playing singer Ann Vriend, provided beautiful music as we dined.

At the conclusion of the event, walking through The Rocks, I managed to attract a lot of attention while wearing my big white cowboy hat, courtesy of the Calgary Stampede.

I am now inspired to explore Canada, I just have to decide when to go.

DON’T FORGET VALENTINE’S DAY

February 10, 2012

DON’T FORGET VALENTINE’S DAY   I was beginning to think there was not enough romance in my life when advertisements on TV and newspapers kept reminding me Valentine’s Day would soon be here.   Everything from flowers and chocolates to lingerie is being offered to spice up my life on the 14th February.

I think I will stick to the more traditional offers from hotels and restaurants who are turning their dining rooms into shrines to romance with champagne, roses and special multi-course menus to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

As I have grown older, romance seems to have been put on the backburner, what with so many other day to day things to worry about.  I have decided it’s about time I stopped taking my husband for granted and do something special for him.  I’m going to surprise him with a romantic dinner in the restaurant at Sydney’s elegant Radisson Blu Hotel in O’Connell Street.

This hotel is a longtime favourite of mine so I did not have to think twice about making a booking for dinner.  For those romantics who want to extend the evening’s celebrations, the hotel is offering some special accommodation packages.  Sandra T.

“Why didn’t I ever go cruising before?”

February 7, 2012

After constantly telling my neighbour about the many wonderful times I have enjoyed on cruise ships over the years, she decided to book a ten day cruise aboard the P&O Pacific Jewel, sailing to Noumea and Vila.  I had told her no-one’s life was complete without experiencing the joys of cruising. On her return, I saw by her happy smile that she had thoroughly enjoyed the experience and could not wait to book another voyage.

With one cruise already under her belt, she had the confidence to go for a longer cruise and visit places she had never been to before. Yesterday my husband and I drove her to Sydney’s Barangaroo temporary cruise terminal, where the Sea Princess loomed large as we approached.  Her excitement of what the next two weeks were to bring was electric.

As a senior, my neighbour is proof that age is no barrier to experiencing something new.  Her words  “Why didn’t I ever go cruising before?” did not need an answer.  I can’t wait to hear her stories when she returns. Sandra T.         PHOTOS: John Pond
